Two lines is plenty to start with.

Girl band or boyband is honestly the only choice that shifts the routine much. Room, timing and how twenty-two people fit into a hotel lounge are our problem, not yours.

Why the 90s suits a hen weekend

Everybody already knows the attitude.

The 90s is the decade most hen groups were actually at school for, which means the reference points are already loaded before anyone walks in. Hands on hips, chin up, one eyebrow doing the heavy lifting — that is half a routine before a single count gets taught. It is one of the busiest themes on our hen party dance class list, and it works especially well in a town where the bars along the front are still playing exactly these records at one in the morning.

What makes the decade teachable is how square the choreography is. Everything lands on a count you can hear, the shapes are big enough to see from the back of a function room, and unison does the rest. Your choreographer usually starts with a walk-in — an entrance rather than a warm-up, because entrances are very 90s — then builds the verse in short blocks and saves the sharp, snappy chorus for last. A formation change goes in somewhere if the numbers allow it. Which songs carry the whole thing is decided with your group rather than handed to you, and the choreographer will happily rip up the plan on the day if the room wants something else. As a hen party activity it also has the great advantage of a hard finish: ninety minutes, and you are back out on the front with the whole evening still ahead of you.

Bring the butterfly clips and the inflatable microphones if you like; we do not supply props, costumes or shoes, and nothing about the routine needs them. Nobody has to be able to dance either, and several of the best groups we have taught spent the first five minutes insisting at the door that they could not. Groups that want the decade after this one usually look at the 2000s class, while anyone chasing more neon and less attitude should read the 80s page instead. If a few of you get the taste for it, the weekly dance classes in Blackpool run all year and take complete beginners.

In the flat price

What £185 plus the venue puts on the floor.

Nine out of ten 90s bookings are the longer session. The room is the only add-on, priced before you commit. A 90s dance class hen party by any other name — Blackpool 90s dance hen party, 90s hen do — costs the group exactly this. As hen do dance classes go, this is the one where nobody needs the tune explained.

The usual shape of it

It opens with a walk-in: everyone learns how to arrive, which sounds daft and works brilliantly, because by the time the group has done it twice the nerves have gone somewhere else. The verse gets taught in blocks after that, each one slowed right down and then run at tempo, with the choreographer picking off whoever is behind without making a thing of it. The chorus, which is the sharp bit everyone came for, is saved until the room has earned it.

The last half hour is about putting it together and making it look deliberate: formations if the numbers suit, then the bride out front for the key change. The longer booking earns its keep here, because two complete performances fit inside it and the second is invariably the one that gets shared about. Nothing there is set in stone. The proportions get worked out live once the choreographer has seen what your lot can do.

Verdicts

What the group said on the way to the pub.

The walk-in bit had us crying laughing before we had learnt a single step. Ten out of ten weekend opener.

Booked it for the bride, stayed for the boyband arms.
LaurenHen party of 10 · Blackpool
Our teacher had eight of us who dance and six who genuinely do not, and somehow made it look like one group by the end. That takes some doing.
MegHen party of 14 · Lancaster
We had it in the function room at our hotel on the front, which meant nobody had to walk anywhere in heels. Worth it for that alone, and the routine was brilliant.

The practical bits

90s, answered.

IWhat kind of 90s music does the class use?

Chart pop mostly, because it is what the whole room can sing, though plenty of groups ask for something with a bit more edge. You tell us the general direction and the bride's favourite, and the routine gets built from there. Nothing is promised as a setlist in advance.

IIIs the 90s routine too fast for beginners?

No, and that is the point of teaching it in blocks. Everything is broken down well below tempo, repeated until it is boring, and only then run at speed. Most groups are surprised how sharp they look by the last run.

IIIIs there a dress code for the 90s hen class?

Something you can actually move in, and flat shoes or bare feet. We do not lend out costumes, props or shoes, so any crop tops, bucket hats or butterfly clips are down to you to organise. Half of most groups end up in leggings and nobody minds.

IVCan we do the 90s class at our hotel instead?

Often yes. If the hotel has a function room, or the apartment has a lounge you can clear, we bring the music and the sound gear to you along the Promenade and across the Fylde coast. Tell us the address in the enquiry and we will say straight away whether the space works.

VHow many hens does the 90s class work best with?

Anywhere from about eight to twenty-eight, and the routine gets shaped to fit rather than the other way round. Smaller groups get more individual attention; bigger ones get formations and a proper two-sided face-off. The price does not change either way.

VIDo you have your own Blackpool venue, or do we find one?

Neither, quite: a function room gets hired for you on Hornby Road (FY1 4RD), near the Winter Gardens and a few minutes off the Promenade, and nothing needs arranging at your end. The other option is that the whole class travels to wherever the party is based — seafront hotels, apartments, holiday lets out towards Lytham St Annes and Fleetwood.
