Why Barbie took over

Half choreography, half photo shoot.

Since the film, this has been one of the fastest-growing requests we get, and the reason is not really the pink. It is that the music is disco underneath, which is the most forgiving thing you can put a nervous room on top of, and the choreography leans on posing as much as stepping. A pose is something anybody can do perfectly on the first try, and getting one thing perfectly right in the first ten minutes changes how a whole group approaches a hen do dance class.

A session usually alternates between the two halves of that. There is proper dancing — a four-on-the-floor groove, a travelling section, a bit of arm work that makes everyone look taller than they are — and then there are the set pieces, where the group learns to land a shape together and hold it while somebody counts to four. Those held moments are the ones that end up as the photograph on the fridge. Blackpool suits the theme, frankly, being a town nobody has ever accused of underdoing a colour scheme. Your choreographer decides how much of each the room wants once she has met you, and which songs the routine is set to is agreed with your group rather than promised in advance.

Pink is optional and, if you want it, entirely your own doing: no outfits, props or shoes arrive with the teacher, so cowboy hats and feather boas are a group WhatsApp problem. It is also among the easiest themes to organise when half the party is travelling in from Preston or Lancaster on the morning, since nothing needs rehearsing in advance. If the group would rather have something sharper and more technical, the Ariana Grande class is the one to read next, while ABBA gives you the same singalong warmth with more sequins. Brides who enjoy the teaching here quite often book us again for a first dance before the wedding.

In the flat fee

What £185 plus the venue gets the group.

Ninety minutes is the usual choice for this theme, mostly because the posing takes longer than groups expect. Hiring the function room is the only thing added on top, quoted up front, and there is nothing to hire if we come to your hotel. Some groups ask for a barbie dance class hen party, some for a Blackpool barbie dance hen party. Same session, same flat price.

The usual ninety minutes

The opening is the disco groove, and it is deliberately unambitious: step, step, shoulders, repeat, until the room is in time and nobody is thinking about being watched. The first pose usually comes about fifteen minutes in, and it changes the temperature immediately, because the whole group nails it at once and realises it looks good. From there the choreographer alternates — a phrase of dancing, a set piece, a phrase of dancing — which keeps the energy up and stops any one thing feeling like hard work.

The final stretch is assembly. Sections get stitched together, the travelling part goes in if the floor allows it, and the bride is put wherever she wants to be, whether that is front and centre or safely in the second row. The full booking allows the routine to be danced right through more than once, with the photographs taken while everybody is still in formation. It is the shape we usually work to and not a fixed order, because the floor, the headcount and the general mood all move things around.

What came back

Verdicts from the pink half of the room.

The poses. Honestly, the poses. Every single photo from that weekend is from the last ten minutes of that class.

Pink from head to toe and not one of us could dance. It did not matter at all.

My auntie said she would sit and watch, and she was in the front row by the second song. Still talking about it.

Booked ninety minutes on the advice of whoever answered the email, and she was right — the extra half hour is where it stopped being a lesson and started being a routine.

Common questions

Barbie, answered.

IDoes everyone have to wear pink to the Barbie class?

Not at all, and it makes no difference to the dancing. If your group has agreed a dress code that is your own arrangement — nothing gets handed out at our end, not outfits, not props, not shoes. Flat shoes and something you can move in are the only things that actually matter.

IIWhich songs does the Barbie routine use?

The disco-leaning ones from the soundtrack tend to win the vote, but it is settled with your group rather than fixed by us, and the bride's preference decides any argument. We never promise a setlist in advance because part of it gets chosen in the room.

IIIIs the Barbie class suitable for people who genuinely cannot dance?

It is one of the easiest hen party ideas we offer for exactly that group. Half of the routine is posing, which nobody is bad at, and the dancing underneath sits on a slow, obvious disco count. Nervous hens are usually the ones enjoying it most by the halfway point.

IVCan we book a Barbie dance hen party for a very large group?

Yes, up to about thirty depending on the room, and the fee stays flat however many come. Big groups get more formation and set-piece work because it looks better with numbers behind it. Mention the headcount in the enquiry so the right room gets booked.

VWill there be time for photographs during the Barbie class?

Yes, and they are built in rather than squeezed on the end. The held poses exist partly for the cameras, and the ninety-minute booking leaves space to perform the routine twice so one run can be filmed properly. Someone always volunteers to be the photographer.

VIDo we have to find somewhere for the Barbie class ourselves?

No. A function room on Hornby Road (FY1 4RD) gets hired for you, close to the Winter Gardens and a few minutes from the seafront, and confirmed once the booking is made. The only reason to look elsewhere is if you would sooner have the class at your own hotel or apartment, which we are very happy to do around Blackpool and right across the Fylde coast.
