The one everybody half knows

Everyone thinks they can do it. Almost nobody can.

Ask a room of thirty to do the Thriller dance and every single one of them will pull the claw hands and then stop, because that is genuinely where most people's knowledge ends. Which is exactly what makes it such a satisfying hen do dance class: an hour and a half later the same room can do the shoulder roll, the lurching step, the head snap on the beat and enough of the formation to look properly menacing on video. Very few themes on our hen party dance class list produce that big a gap between what a group arrives able to do and what they leave doing.

The teaching is slower than people expect, and deliberately so. Zombie movement is all about weight and timing — a step that drags, a hand that arrives late, a whole line dropping the same shoulder at the same moment. Getting that unison is the game, and it is why the routine looks brilliant even when performed by hens who have never danced. Bring whatever look you fancy: torn jackets, face paint, a wedding dress that has seen better days. We provide the choreography, music and sound, and we never supply costumes, props or shoes. It is worth saying that a dance hen party built on this theme rewards commitment far more than talent — the groups who go all in on the growling and the staggering always end up with the better footage.

Groups who want more neon and less horror usually switch to the 80s class, and anyone who enjoys the sharpness of the movement tends to like Street Dance for the same reasons. October parties get an unfair advantage here, with the Illuminations still on and the whole town leaning slightly spooky — though we have taught it in July to a group who then reused it as a surprise wedding dance, which we would thoroughly recommend.

The whole cost

£185 plus the venue — this is what is in it.

Thriller groups nearly always take the ninety minutes, because unison takes drilling and drilling takes time. Hiring the room is the only thing added, quoted plainly up front, and skipped altogether when we come to you. However the group chat phrases it — thriller dance class hen party, thriller dance hen party Blackpool — the fee doesn't change with numbers.

Roughly how it runs

Ninety minutes of Thriller.

The warm-up is about loosening shoulders and spines, because every bit of this routine lives in the upper body. Then the recognisable eight counts get broken down far more slowly than anybody anticipates — hands, then feet, then the two together, then the same phrase again with the timing dragged where it should be. Groups tend to go quiet at this point, concentrating, before the first proper run makes the whole room laugh at itself.

The second half is about looking like one creature rather than twenty people. The formation gets staggered so nobody is hidden, entrances are added for a couple of hens who fancy them, and the bride is placed wherever suits her nerve. Ninety minutes leaves space to run it right through more than once, which matters because unison always improves on the third go. This is the shape a session usually takes rather than a promised running order — the choreographer decides the balance on the day.

When the zombies left

What Thriller groups tell us.

I had done the claw hands at every wedding since I was fifteen and it turns out I knew nothing. Learning the real thing was so much better.

Booked it for the October weekend and walked back along the front in full zombie make-up. Nobody in this town even blinked.
ErinHen party of 12 · Lancaster
My sister-in-law has watched the video roughly four hundred times.
TamsinHen party of 16 · Blackpool
Slower and more detailed than I expected, in a good way. By the last run we actually looked like we meant it, which for our lot is a miracle.

Ask us anything

Thriller, answered.

IHow much of the Thriller routine will we get through?

You learn the section everybody recognises, built up properly, plus as much extra as your group's pace allows. How far it goes is decided in the room rather than promised in advance. Ninety minutes usually gets a group considerably further than an hour does.

IIIs the Thriller choreography difficult?

The steps themselves are simple; the timing is the tricky part, and that is what the drilling is for. Because zombies are meant to move oddly, a slightly wonky arm often improves it. Groups with no dance background manage this theme perfectly well.

IIIDoes the group need zombie outfits and face paint?

Plenty of parties do and it makes the video far better, but nothing is expected. Anything themed comes from your side — we do not supply costumes, props or shoes. If you are painting faces, do it before the class rather than during, and pick something that survives ninety minutes of moving about.

IVIs Thriller only a good hen party idea near Halloween?

Not at all — it books all year, and a July group commits just as hard. Autumn weekends do have a certain something, with the lights on and the town already full. Whenever you come, the routine is the same and so is the flat price.

VCan we surprise the bride with it later?

People do exactly that, and some take it as far as the wedding reception. Tell us in the enquiry if the class is secretly rehearsal for something else and the teacher will make sure the ending is one you can actually reproduce without her there.

VIWhere does a Thriller hen class happen in Blackpool?

Either in a function room we hire in Blackpool town centre — Hornby Road, FY1 4RD, minutes from the Winter Gardens — with the room confirmed as you book, or at your own base. Hotels along the Promenade, apartments, holiday lets and places out across the Fylde coast all work, as long as something can be pushed against a wall.
