Why samba goes down well here

Loud is the whole point.

Blackpool does big, bright and unembarrassed better than anywhere, and samba is the theme on our hen party dance class list that matches that mood beat for beat. There is no story to follow and no character to play — there is a rhythm, and the job is to get on it and stay there. That suits a group who have spent the morning on the Promenade and want the afternoon to be pure energy. It is also the theme that surprises people most: nobody expects the quietest bridesmaid to be the one who finds the bounce first, and yet.

Technique-wise, the legs carry it. The teacher builds the bounce slowly, because getting it into the knees and ankles rather than the shoulders is what makes the whole thing look right, then adds travelling steps so the group covers ground instead of jogging on the spot. Arms come last and they come big. Feathers, sequins and anything neon are yours to bring if you want them; we don't hand out costumes, props or shoes, and honestly trainers and something you can sweat in serve you better. If the group would rather be sharp than bouncy, the Street Dance class is the one, and for the same Latin heat with less cardio there is the Salsa class.

The finale is arranged so the bride leads the line into the last section, with the rest of the party behind her doing the noisiest thing they have learned all day. As a dance hen party it earns its keep twice over: the group gets a proper workout without calling it one, and the video comes out looking like a carnival broke into the room. Bigger parties simply get a wider formation and more floor rather than a watered-down version of the routine, and the noise scales neatly with the numbers. Anyone who wants to keep the bounce going can pick it back up in our weekly classes in town.

Included in the fee

The whole group, ninety minutes, £185 plus the venue.

Samba groups almost always take the longer session — the legs need a build-up and the finale needs room. Hiring the function room is the sole extra, quoted before you book, and there is none if we travel to you. Some groups ask for a samba dance class hen party, some for a Blackpool samba dance hen party. Same session, same flat price. The hen party idea for a party that would rather sweat than sit.

The warm-up is longer than usual for samba, and deliberately so — the bounce lives in the ankles and knees, and they need waking up before anything else happens. From there the teacher drills the basic step at half speed, then at tempo, looping short pieces until the back of the room stops watching the front. Travelling steps go on next, which is the point the group realises how much floor it is about to use.

The last third puts arms on everything, sets the formation and hands the bride the front of the line for the closing section. With ninety minutes there is time to run the whole routine twice and still finish with a pose everyone can hold long enough to photograph. What actually happens is decided in the room on the day with your group — read this as the usual shape rather than a promised schedule.

Afterwards

What we heard on the way out.

I have never seen my sister sweat like that willingly. The samba routine absolutely finished us and we would do it again tomorrow.

Twenty-two of us and it still looked organised. The teacher had the whole room bouncing in about ten minutes flat.

We booked samba because the bride hates anything slow. Correct call.

Things people ask

Samba, explained.

IHow energetic is the Samba class really?

It is the busiest theme we teach, and groups should expect to be warm within ten minutes. That said, the teacher scales it — there are lower-impact versions of every step, and anyone who wants to take a section sitting down can rejoin for the finale without missing anything.

IIDo you provide feathers or carnival costumes for Samba?

No. We supply no costumes, props, headdresses or shoes, so anything colourful comes from your group. Plenty of parties turn up in leggings and a bright top and look brilliant on camera anyway, and trainers make the footwork much easier.

IIICan a total beginner keep up in a Samba hen do dance class?

Yes, because it is taught from the ground up and repeated far more than people expect. The basic bounce is one movement learned slowly at half speed before anything gets added to it, and nobody is put on the spot alone at any point.

IVWhat music does the Samba routine use?

Usually a build from traditional carnival percussion into something with a modern beat, but the tracks depend on what your group likes and what the bride asks for. Nothing on this page is a promised setlist: the music gets agreed with your group first, and the routine is built around it in the room.

VDoes samba still work with twenty-five of us?

It is arguably the best one we have for numbers. Twenty or thirty people all doing the same travelling step looks enormous, and the routine is built to expand sideways rather than get cramped. Tell us the headcount and the formation gets planned around it.

VIWe're in a hotel on the front — where does the Samba class happen?

Either works. Ours is a function room we hire in Blackpool town centre on Hornby Road (FY1 4RD), a few minutes from the trams and confirmed when your date is held. Otherwise the class comes to your hotel function room, apartment or holiday let anywhere along the Promenade and the Fylde coast, provided there is floor to clear.
