Why groups pick street

It looks like the videos.

Street is the theme people choose when they want the footage to look good, and it delivers because the style was built for cameras in the first place. It sits at the modern end of our hen party dance class list, next to all the retro ones, and it tends to get booked by groups whose weekend is already a bit more nightclub than afternoon tea. The town has been teaching people to dance for a hundred years in ballrooms; this is the same instinct with the volume turned up and the shoulders loosened.

The first job is the groove — the bounce that sits under everything and is the difference between doing the moves and actually dancing them. From there the teacher adds isolations, chest and shoulder work, and one properly satisfying eight-count that the whole group learns to hit together. Formations go on top, because eight people arranged in two lines look about four times better than eight people in a clump. Wear trainers and something that lets you bend; we hand out no shoes, costumes or props, so any matching tops or caps are your group's own doing. Parties who want the pop-video polish take the Commercial class instead, and those who want the same energy with a decade attached go for the 2000s class.

The bride usually ends up front and centre for the final eight, with the group hitting the last beat behind her — the shot the whole hen do dance class has been quietly building towards for an hour and a half. As a hen party idea it suits groups who would rather be impressed with themselves than embarrassed, and nothing has to go to the floor unless somebody asks for it, so knees and dignity both survive the afternoon. It is easily the most repeat-booked style among people who then want more of it: our weekly classes in town pick up a few new faces off the back of most hen weekends.

All in the price

Where the £185 plus the venue goes.

Street groups nearly always take the ninety minutes, because cleaning an eight-count until it hits properly is what makes the video worth having. Room hire is the one thing on top, quoted before you book, and it vanishes if we come to your hotel. Call it a street dance dance class hen party or a Blackpool street dance dance hen party — the price is the same for the whole group.

How ninety minutes tends to go

Ninety minutes of street.

Ninety-minute workshopplus the venue£185
One-hour classplus the venue£160

The opening stretch is groove and nothing else — bounce, weight, timing — because everything later hangs off it and nobody looks right without it. The teacher then hands out isolations in small doses, chest and shoulders first, and lets the room get comfortable being slightly ridiculous before anything gets fast. By about the halfway mark the first eight-count is in and being repeated at full speed.

After that it is cleaning and staging: tightening the count so the group hits together, dropping people into lines, and putting the bride at the front for the closing beat. The extra half hour means two full performances, one to check it works and one for the phones. Exactly how it splits gets worked out on the day with your group, so take this as the usual pattern rather than a promised schedule.

The verdict

What the group said afterwards.

We wanted something that didn't feel like a hen party cliche and the street dance class was spot on. The video genuinely looks like we know what we're doing.

Two of us dance and the rest absolutely do not, and somehow it worked for all eleven. Nobody was bored and nobody was lost.

The groove bit at the start took me ages and then it clicked and I felt about nineteen again.

Questions we get

Street dance, answered.

IIs the Street Dance class too hard for beginners?

No, though it is honest work. The groove is taught before anything else and everything is broken into small pieces at half speed, so a group with no dance background gets there. The teacher adjusts how much detail goes in depending on how the room is doing.

IITrainers, joggers, what? Kit for the street dance hen.

Trainers and something you can move and sweat in — that is genuinely it. We don't provide shoes, costumes or props, so matching tops or caps are your group's own idea. Leave anything with a stiff waistband at the hotel.

IIIWhich music will our Street Dance routine use?

Whatever your group listens to, within reason, and the bride's pick usually anchors it. We never guarantee a track list in advance — the music is agreed with you first and the choreographer builds the routine around it in the room.

IVCan older members of the group join in the Street Dance class?

They do, constantly, and they are often better at it than anyone expects. The moves can be scaled so nothing needs to go to the floor or jump, and anyone who wants to sit a section out is welcome to and can rejoin for the last run.

VIs Street Dance a good hen party activity for a big group?

It handles numbers well because formations do the heavy lifting — twenty people in staggered lines look far better than twenty people in a huddle. Tell us the headcount in the enquiry and the staging gets planned around it.

VIHave you got somewhere in Blackpool, or do you come to us?

Both are on the table. The function room we hire in Blackpool town centre sits on Hornby Road (FY1 4RD) and gets confirmed with your booking, which suits groups scattered across different hotels. If you have a function room, apartment or holiday let with clear floor anywhere on the Promenade or across the Fylde coast, the class travels to you instead.
