Why this one still sells out

Everything but the lift.

Nearly forty years on, this is still the film people quote at each other in the taxi from the station. Which is why Dirty Dancing sits near the top of our hen party dance class list, and why we're straight with groups about the one thing we won't do: the lift. Nobody gets carried over anyone's head. It's a genuine injury risk with a group who met their choreographer forty minutes earlier, and a hen weekend that ends in A&E is nobody's idea of a good story. Everything else the film gives you — the mambo, the hips, the walk, the practice-log balance gag — is fair game.

What the session actually teaches is a group mambo with attitude. Weight shifts first, because the hips only work once the feet do; then the basic step, then a turn, then the sequence that the whole room performs together. There's usually a bit of partner work in the middle for anyone who fancies it, rotated so nobody is stuck with the same person and nobody is left standing out. A dirty dancing hen do dance class often has one guest who is convinced she'll hate it and ends up leading the middle section. Music tends to come from the soundtrack, but which tracks carry the routine is settled with your group and can change on the day; we don't sell a fixed setlist, and we don't supply costumes, shoes or props, so the pink dress is on you.

It travels well as a dance hen party, too: it's low on jumping, high on laughing, and leaves the group in a good mood rather than a heap, which matters when there's a table booked and the Illuminations to walk through afterwards. Groups who like the partner side of it usually look at the Salsa class next; anyone who wants a scored, sequinned version goes for Strictly. And the couples we later teach a first dance to fairly often trace the whole thing back to this class.

No extras, no upsells

One fee — £185 plus the venue — covers everyone.

Most Dirty Dancing groups take the ninety minutes, because the partner section eats time and the finale deserves a proper run. Room hire is the sole extra, quoted before anything is agreed, and there's none of it when we travel to you. A Blackpool dirty dancing dance hen party that's priced once, for everyone — not a dirty dancing dance class hen party that grows with the guest list.

Roughly how the time splits

Ninety minutes of Dirty Dancing.

It opens with weight and rhythm rather than steps — a few minutes of shifting side to side until the room is in time, which is the whole secret of mambo and the reason people think they can't do it. The basic step follows, then a turn, then a short sequence drilled until the back of the room has stopped watching the front. The partner section usually lands around the middle, with everyone rotating so it stays daft rather than awkward, and anyone who'd rather dance solo simply carries on solo.

The last stretch is the bit people came for: the group finale, staged so everybody is visible and the bride gets whatever moment she's happy with. Ninety minutes leaves time to run it twice and film the second go, and there's normally a final pose that involves a lot of shouting and no lifting whatsoever. Take this as the usual pattern rather than a guaranteed running order — how the session really divides is worked out in the room, with your group in front of us.

After the class

What four groups told us.

Half of us came for the lift and left not caring about it. The finale was better and nobody ended up on crutches.

My mum did the partner bit with my future sister-in-law and they've been friends ever since. Genuinely.

Hips. Ninety minutes of hips. Superb.

The bride was mortified for about four minutes and then absolutely ran the room. Best thing we booked all weekend.

Asked most often

Dirty Dancing, honestly answered.

IDo we get to do the lift in the Dirty Dancing class?

No — we don't teach it and we won't promise it. Hoisting someone overhead is a real injury risk with a group who met the choreographer three-quarters of an hour ago, and no photo is worth a sprained back. The finale we build instead tends to end up in more videos than the lift would have.

IIDoes everyone need a partner for the Dirty Dancing routine?

No. The bulk of the routine is danced as a group, and the partner section is optional and rotated so nobody is paired off for long or left out. Odd numbers are completely normal and never a problem.

IIIIs the Dirty Dancing class too suggestive for a mixed-age hen group?

It's cheeky rather than raunchy, and the choreographer reads the room before deciding how far to push it. Mums, aunties and grandmothers do this class constantly and are usually the ones egging everyone on. Say in the enquiry if you'd like it kept gentle.

IVHow hard is the mambo for people who've never danced?

Easier than it looks once the weight change clicks, which is why we spend the first few minutes on nothing else. Everything is built in short pieces and repeated rather than rushed. Being able to count to eight is genuinely enough.

VDo we need the pink dress, or any kit at all?

Something you can move in — trousers and trainers beat a floaty dress. We don't supply costumes, props or shoes, so if the group has planned outfits they come with you. It's a popular hen party idea for exactly that reason: nothing has to be bought.

VIWhereabouts is the Dirty Dancing class held?

Hornby Road, FY1 4RD is where most groups end up — a function room we hire in Blackpool town centre, handy for the trams, Blackpool North and everything on the front. If you'd rather stay put, the class comes to your hotel, apartment or holiday let here or elsewhere on the Fylde coast.
