Why Disney lands in Blackpool

The films you never actually grew out of.

Ask a hen group to pick a theme and Disney is the one that gets an actual cheer, because there is no explaining to do. Everybody in the room has an opinion about which film is the best one, most of them are wrong, and that argument is half the warm-up. It is why Disney sits near the top of our hen party dance class list every summer: the choreographer never has to sell the music, so the whole session goes on shapes, timing and the bit where twenty people hit the same arm at the same moment. The steps themselves are big and clean — reaching lines, a spin that travels, a lot of chin-up posture — and they read beautifully on camera, which matters when the video is half the point.

Most groups end up wanting two flavours in one routine. There is the princess half, all long arms and soft turns, the section your six-year-old niece will demand you perform at the wedding. Then there is the villain half, where the shoulders drop, the walk slows down and the aunties suddenly come alive. The choreographer decides how far to push that split once she has seen who is in the room; a hen do dance class of nine and one of twenty-six need different amounts of it, and nothing is settled before the day. Tiaras, capes and a bride sash are yours to bring if you fancy them — we do not supply costumes, props or shoes, and plenty of groups turn up in leggings and do just as well.

The finale belongs to the bride, sized to taste: a step forward on the last big note, or a quiet place in the front line if she would rather not be looked at. If the group would sooner sing than sparkle, the Musicals class covers similar ground with more show tunes, while the Wicked class takes the green and defiant route. Blackpool suits all of it, because this is a town that has never once been embarrassed by a bit of spectacle, and a room full of hens singing a Disney chorus at four in the afternoon fits neatly between the trams and the Comedy Carpet. A few of every group carry on afterwards — our weekly classes pick up several a year that way.

Where the money goes

Everything the flat £185 plus the venue includes.

Most groups pick the ninety-minute version. The one extra is the room hire, quoted in the same email, and it does not arise at all if the class comes to your hotel. Call it a disney dance class hen party or a Blackpool disney dance hen party — the price is the same for the whole group.

The usual shape

Ninety minutes, roughly like this.

The warm-up doubles as the first eight counts, so the room is already moving before anyone works out that they are dancing. From there the choreographer builds in short phrases and loops each one — big reaching arms, a turn that travels, the posture change that makes the villain section land — until the people hiding at the back stop hiding. If the group wants the two-sided version, that is where it appears, each half learning its bit and then showing it off to the other.

The back end is assembly: the halves join up, the chorus goes on top, and the bride gets her step forward. Ninety minutes leaves room to run the whole thing twice, once to prove you can and once with every phone in the air, plus a shot of the group lined up at the end. How long each stage lasts is worked out live, with your group in front of the choreographer, so read the above as a usual shape and not a fixed running order.

Afterwards

What they said on the way to the tram.

Sixteen women, three generations, one Disney routine, and by the end my nan was doing the villain walk better than any of us.

We booked it as the safe option for a mixed-age group and it turned out to be the best hour and a half of the whole weekend.

Asked whether the bride could be a villain rather than a princess. Nobody batted an eyelid, and it made the routine.

Before you book

Disney questions, answered.

IDo we get to choose the Disney songs?

Usually whichever ones the group shouts loudest about — the big chorus numbers work best, because everybody can sing them while they move. Send us a couple of favourites with your enquiry and the bride's film of choice goes in. Nothing is locked in beforehand — the running order gets built on the day around what your group wants.

IIDo we have to dress up for the Disney class?

Not at all, though tiaras and sashes do photograph well. Costumes, props and shoes are not something we provide, so whatever you want to wear travels up with you. Leggings and trainers are honestly the better call for the dancing itself.

IIIIs a Disney routine too twee for our group?

It does not have to be. Half the groups who book it want the villain side far more than the princess side, and the choreography will happily lean sarcastic if that is your lot. It is the most forgiving dance hen party theme we teach, precisely because you pick the tone.

IVCan teenagers and younger family join the Disney class?

They do regularly and it works well — the moves are simple and there is nothing risqué in any of them. Tell us the age spread in your enquiry so the choreographer pitches it right. It is one of the few hen party ideas a fifteen-year-old bridesmaid and a grandmother can both throw themselves into.

VWhat group size suits the Disney class?

Anything from about eight to thirty in one room. The price is flat either way, so a bigger group simply makes the chorus louder. Larger parties usually take the ninety minutes rather than the hour, because there are more people to get in time with each other.

VIWhich part of town hosts the Disney session?

Usually the function room we hire on Hornby Road (FY1 4RD). The Winter Gardens is round the corner, the station and the Promenade are both an easy walk, and the room details reach you once the booking is in. The alternative is that we come to you — any hotel function room, apartment or holiday let with clear floor space, along the front or out across the Fylde coast.
