Why salsa suits a hen weekend

You leave able to do it.

Most themes on our hen party dance class list give a group a routine for the afternoon. Salsa gives them something that still works at eleven o'clock at night, which is why it keeps getting picked for weekends built around going out afterwards. The step is small, the music is familiar to anyone who has ever been near a holiday, and the rhythm sits under everything so nobody has to count out loud for long. It is also the least intimidating hen do dance class we run for parties who have convinced themselves they can't dance: three steps and a pause, and the room has it.

The teaching starts with feet and stays there until the feet are honest. Then the hips arrive, which is where the laughing starts, and then turns — spotting, timing, how not to end up facing the wrong wall. Nobody needs a partner: everything is taught solo and then arranged so the group moves as one shape, usually a circle where the party can see each other's faces. Bring trainers or flat shoes you can pivot in. We don't provide shoes, costumes or props, so if the group has bought flowers for hair or something red to wear, that comes with you. Groups after the same heat with more carnival tend to look at the Samba class, and those wanting drama over party go for the Flamenco class.

The bride gets her own moment in the middle of the circle, typically a turn sequence sized to her nerve on the day. It makes a good dance hen party choice for mixed groups: mums, teenagers and the friend who claims two left feet all end up in the same routine without anyone being carried. Nobody gets put on the spot on their own either, which tends to be the first thing a nervous group asks about. A fair few couples get the taste here and come back to us for a wedding first dance months later, which is how we know the steps stick.

Where the money goes

The ninety minutes, itemised — £185 plus the venue.

Ninety minutes is what nearly every salsa group books, because the turns need the extra half hour. Hiring the room is the only additional cost, priced before you say yes — and it disappears if we come to you. However the group chat phrases it — salsa dance class hen party, salsa dance hen party Blackpool — the fee doesn't change with numbers.

How it tends to run

Ninety minutes of salsa.

Ninety-minute workshopplus the venue£185
One-hour classplus the venue£160

The first stretch is a warm-up that quietly becomes the basic step, so by the time anyone asks when the dancing starts it has already been going for ten minutes. The teacher then layers on weight changes and hips, keeping each piece short and looping it until the room stops staring at its own feet. Turns come next, one at a time, with the spotting explained properly rather than shouted over the music.

The back half puts it into a shape — a circle or a couple of lines, depending on numbers and how much floor there is — and adds the bride's turn in the middle. Ninety minutes leaves space to run the finished thing twice, once to prove it works and once for filming, with a pose on the last beat. The exact split is decided in the room on the day; this is the usual pattern, not a fixed running order.

What they said after

Straight from the group chat.

We did the salsa class at three and were still doing the turn in a bar at midnight. Worth it for that alone.

My mum, my nan and my bridesmaids in one circle, all doing the same steps. I did not expect that to be the bit I cried at.

Nobody had a partner and it did not matter one bit — the teacher had us moving as a group in about twenty minutes.

The usual questions

Salsa, sorted.

IOur group is all women — does Salsa need partners?

Not at all — the whole session is built for a group of hens rather than couples. Steps and turns are taught solo, then arranged into a circle or lines so the party dances as one. If a few partners do come along they simply join in.

IIIs Salsa too hard for a hen party of complete beginners?

It is one of the gentler starts we offer, because the basic step is three weight changes and a pause. The teacher drills that until it is automatic before anything else goes on top, and drops or adds detail depending on how the room is coping.

IIIHeels or trainers for the salsa hen party?

Something you can turn in, with flat shoes or trainers rather than anything that grips the floor. We don't supply shoes, costumes or props, so any themed touches are down to your group. Heels are welcome for the photographs but most people swap out for the dancing.

IVWhich songs will the Salsa routine use?

Usually a mix of classic Latin tracks and something more current with a salsa rhythm under it, and if the bride has a song she loves it gets worked in. Nothing here is a promised setlist — the music is agreed with your group and the routine is shaped on the day.

VCan we book Salsa as a hen party idea for a group with different fitness levels?

Yes, and it is one of the better themes for that. The footwork is low-impact and stays on the spot, so it suits anyone from a runner to someone who would rather not jump. Anyone who needs to sit a section out can, and usually rejoins for the finale.

VIWhereabouts in Blackpool does the Salsa class happen?

Most groups dance in the function room we hire in Blackpool town centre — Hornby Road, FY1 4RD, handy for the trams and Blackpool North, with the room confirmed once your date is held. The alternative is your own base: hotel function rooms, apartments and holiday lets along the Promenade and out across the Fylde coast all work if there is floor to clear.
